With 2017 just around the corner, now is time to make New Year resolutions, both personal and professional… The new year is the perfect opportunity for anyone in business to set themselves new goals, and focus on their targets over the course of the year.

When it comes to making resolutions, set yourself challenging but achievable targets. Do not set yourself up to fail at the first hurdle; it is important that you make progress and feel a sense of achievement as you hit your goals. This will generate momentum, and ensure that you continue to make progress throughout the year. Many people set their targets using the SMART system, and one of the benefits of this is that it brings structure and focus to your goal setting.

S – Specific

M – Measurable

A – Attainable

R – Realistic

T – Timely

It’s hard to give targeted ideas within an article, as many of your resolutions may be business specific, but the purpose of this information is to encourage you to set resolutions in the first place, as well as giving you some ideas to get you started.

New Year Resolutions For Everyone

1. Identify and Eliminate Inefficiencies

Spend some time examining how you and your staff work. Is there one member of your team who is very efficient with email? Perhaps they could explain their processes, and that shared knowledge and expertise will then spread across the organization. Only after assessing procedures and identifying weaknesses, can you then rectify the problems. Just because the company has followed a certain method or process for years, does not mean that it is the most efficient way to complete a task.

As inefficiencies are eliminated the company will become more businesslike, and staff will gain job satisfaction as they become more productive and less frustrated. A quick and simple assessment could uncover many common yet easily solved problems.

2. Perform A Critical Review Of Your Website

When was the last time you reviewed your website, its appearance, and content? Many small businesses see web development as a tickbox exercise, but nothing could be further from the truth. Your website is your number one sales tool; it is the first impression many people will get of your company. If the content is poor, out of date, or full of grammatical errors, visitors will get a bad impression of your brand. One of your first tasks of the new year should be a thorough and critical examination of your site.

3. Test Your Company As A Customer

Many small businesses have an entirely different perception of their business than that of their clients. Set up a persona, visit your company website, call in, and test every form of contact with your company. Do you get frustrated at trying to get through to the right department? Is it a positive or a horrible experience? The benefit of this test is that it will let you experience your company as a client does. It should also help you make decisions about what will improve your customer/client relationships, which long term has the potential to drastically improve your profit margins and customer retention levels.

4. Embrace Social Media

Social media is a relatively modern phenomenon that shows no sign of slowing down. If your social media strategy is poor, you could be missing out on new business, or worse, lose clients to your competition who are embracing social media fully. Make 2017 the year that your company makes full use of social media for all your business needs. Used properly,  social media has the potential to gain your company huge exposure for minimal cost. These statistics demonstrate the reach and power of social media.

These four resolutions were suggested because they are easy, actionable tasks. When it comes to making resolutions, the key is to follow through, which is best done with achievable goals. Your business is a constantly evolving entity, and you cannot afford to take your eye off the ball for even a second.  Continually examine your business throughout the year, and look for ways to improve. That perhaps may be the most important resolution of all.
